While still in pre-season, Tuesday could be a pivotal moment in Manchester United’s upcoming campaign as the club are set for talks with Marcus Rashford about how best to deal with his shoulder injury.

The 23-year-old has been struggling with a muscle tear in a shoulder since November, playing through pain for both the Red Devils and England.

An operation on his left shoulder has looked likely, but the Red Devils are keen to avoid it if possible as surgery would rule the forward out until October, missing the first couple of months of the Premier League season.

The Manchester United hierarchy had hoped that a holiday after England’s Euro 2020 exploits, which saw Rashford take three weeks off with new United signing Jadon Sancho, would be enough rest for the injury to ease.

That could still be the case, but the Daily Mail report that Rashford still feels surgery is the most appropriate course of action to fix the problem.

A scan reportedly stated that the tear is unlikely to become any more severe, but Rashford was playing with painkilling injections last season, so it is far from ideal.

A decision could be made on Tuesday when Rashford meets with United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, five days before he was due to return to pre-season training on Sunday.

Solskjaer said of the situation this month: ‘We’re looking at the best options. He went away just to reflect on it a bit. We have to take the best course of action for him and the club. We’re still addressing that with the experts.’

The Red Devils continue their pre-season preparations against Brentford on Wednesday, then face Preston and Everton before starting their Premier League campaign against Leeds on 14 August.
