Newcastle United’s hopes of appointing Marc Overmars as the club’s new Director of Football have come to an end after the Dutchman opted to stay at Ajax.

The Magpies are looking for a figurehead to oversee the football side of operations in the north-east following the £305million takeover of the club by a Saudi consortium.

Overmars is considered one of the finest operators in world football after guiding Ajax through a trophy-laden period in the last nine years, that has been executed with the help of fantastic recruitment set-up.

Newcastle felt Overmars was the perfect figure to help the club enter a new period of their history and the Dutchman would have far greater resources to work with at the Magpies compared to what’s available to him in the Dutch capital.

But the Athletic claim that Overmars has decided to stay with his boyhood club and has no intention of joining Newcastle.

The former Arsenal winger has long been linked with a return to his former club and he’d be open to joining the Gunners.

But Overmars’ current deal at Ajax runs until 2024 and he plans on seeing that out before reconsidering his future.

Eddie Howe is set to be appointed as manager in the next 48 hours after a deal for Unai Emery fell through.

Newcastle are 19th in the Premier League and are yet to win this term, having played 11 times.
