The 33-year-old was once one of the most coveted players in world football but injuries have stunted his career.
The German is out of contract with Dortmund in the summer and it’s unlikely that the club will offer him a new deal.
Though Reus turns 34 in May, he has the experience that Ten Hag is craving in his frontline to supplement the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
According to Bundesliga expert Christian Falk, United are interested in Reus and Ten Hag has spoken to the German’s agent about a summer move to Old Trafford.
Reus earns around £200,000-a-week at Dortmund and he would have to accept a significant decrease to join the Red Devils.
The move would be dependent on Reus and Dortmund failing to agree on a new deal, while the German would have to be realistic about his salary given his age and injury history.
United signed Wout Weghorst on a six-month loan deal last week, though Burnley are keen to retain the Dutchman next season.
Ten Hag will have a reduced budget this summer, having spent £220m last time out.
However, finishing in the top four could ease the burden, while he will also look to recoup cash from player sales.
