Manchester United are ready to make a move for RB Leipzig midfielder Dani Olmo in the summer, but only if his preferred switch to Barcelona falls through.

The Spain international has taken a unique path in his career so far, leaving the youth system at Barcelona when he was 16 for Dinamo Zagreb, before switching to Leipzig in January 2020.

Barcelona are keen to bring him back to Catalonia, he wants to make the return and Leipzig are open to selling in the summer after convincing him to stay on for one more season earlier this year.

It appeared that the deal was near enough agreed, but Spanish publication El Nacional report that Barcelona’s interest in Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling is concrete and could throw a spanner in the works.

New Barca boss Xavi is desperate to add an attacking option to his squad in January and that could be a loan switch for Sterling in January or permanent summer move as he has fallen down the pecking order at City.

Olmo has made it clear that a move to Barcelona is his preferred option, but if they instead opt for Sterling, or he even perceives that eh is no longer wanted at the Camp Nou, then he could take up the Manchester United option.

The Red Devils are aware that the 23-year-old wants the Barca switch, but will be ready to step in if it doesn’t come to fruition.

Olmo has struggled with injury so far this season, only making four Bundesliga appearances, with only two coming from the start.

He has made one Champions League start this campaign, which came in the wild 6-3 defeat to Manchester City in September, while he also started Spain’s win over Sweden this week.
