The Dutchman was placed in interim charge following Erik ten Hag’s sacking last Monday.
The former PSV boss has overseen a win against Leicester City and a draw against Chelsea during his two games in charge.
He will be given a further two matches against PAOK in the Europa League and Leicester in the Premier League before handing over the reins to Amorim.
The Portuguese’s backroom staff appointments have not been confirmed as yet, with United still in negotiations with Sporting to bring Amorim’s staff with him.
But Van Nistelrooy has outlined his desire to stay at the club and says he will work for Amorim in any capacity.
“Before I came to United I was looking to manage, no doubt about that. When United came in with this opportunity, for me, it was a fantastic opportunity,” said Van Nistelrooy.
“I wanted to be here and I put that [management ambitions] aside. For me, that was a deliberate decision to come here and help out. I just want to stay and do the same thing and, for me, that’s my focus for the moment.”
And the Sun says Van Nistelrooy has the full backing of the United dressing room.
The Dutchman has impressed the squad with his man management and his dedication to work with individuals.
Whether Amorim opts to keep Van Nistelrooy remains to be seen, but Darren Fletcher, who is currently first team coach, is another popular figure that the squad would like to keep.
