Erik ten Hag’s ‘punishment runs’ have been blamed for Manchester United’s injury crisis.

The Red Devils travel to Liverpool today without a number of first team players.

Harry Maguire, Anthony Martial, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, Mason Mount, Tyrell Malacia and Amad Diallo are all set to miss the trip to Anfield.

United have been plagued by injuries this season, and Ten Hag has been unable to pick his first choice XI at any point.

Consistent team selections were a feature of Ten Hag’s first season in charge but injuries have made that impossible this term and the amount of muscle injuries has raised eyebrows.

According to the Times, many in the United squad feel Ten Hag’s ‘punishment runs’ philosophy has contributed to the injury crisis.

Ten Hag famously made his side run over eight miles the day after a 4-0 defeat to Brentford and he’s continued with the policy.

The Dutchman often ‘punishes’ the losing side in training by making them go on gruelling runs.

Few will have sympathy for United’s squad, who have turned on the last four managers at Old Trafford.
