Manchester – In a further bid to stabilize its finances, Manchester United has announced plans to make up to 200 additional staff redundant, continuing the club’s ongoing cost-cutting measures. This latest wave of cuts follows an earlier round last season that saw around 250 employees depart.
According to a statement from CEO Omar Berrada, the decision is part of a “wide-ranging series of measures” aimed at transforming the club and ensuring it is in the strongest possible position to succeed on the pitch. “We have a responsibility to put Manchester United in the strongest position to win across our men’s, women’s, and academy teams,” Berrada said, adding that while the decision to cut staff is difficult, it is necessary to address persistent financial losses.
The latest redundancies, which are expected to affect between 150 and 200 club staff, will be communicated to affected employees between April and June. In addition to job cuts, Manchester United plans to consolidate some operations by relocating staff from Old Trafford to the Carrington training ground and reducing the presence at its London office in Mayfair. Measures such as ending free lunches at Old Trafford are also expected to save the club over £1 million annually.
The decision comes on the heels of staggering financial results, with the club reporting losses of more than £300 million over the past three years. Recent financial disclosures revealed a drop in revenue to £198.7 million for the last three months of 2024 from £225.8 million in the corresponding period a year earlier. “We have lost money for the past five consecutive years,” Berrada noted, emphasizing that curtailing expenditure is critical to reinvesting in the team and facilities.
As Manchester United continues to navigate its financial challenges, these restructuring efforts underscore the club’s commitment to returning to sustainable profitability while remaining competitive on the field.
