Paris Saint-Germain have knocked back an initial approach from Manchester United for Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine is United’s preferred choice to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked on Sunday after a 4-1 defeat to Watford less than 24 hours earlier.

Though United stated their intention to appoint an interim manager for the remainder of the season, they had been given hope that Pochettino was open to moving to Old Trafford midway through the campaign.

The Red Devils therefore sounded out Paris Saint-Germain about Pochettino’s availability but the Ligue 1 giants informed intermediaries that they have no intention of letting the Argentine leave, according to ESPN.

Pochettino is said to be keen on a move to United but unless he agitates for a move PSG will not let him leave at this moment in time.

The French club hold an interest in Zinedine Zidane, with the club’s heirachy aware that the Real Madrid legend could persuade Kylian Mbappe to stay at the club.

But Zidane intends on seeing out his year sabbatical and would prefer to join a club at the end of the season.

Paris Saint-Germain have nevertheless contacted Zidane’s entourage and things could progress rapidly should the Frenchman indicate he’s willing to take charge.

Should United fail to appoint Pochettino, they will continue their search for an interim manager.

Rudi Garcia has been interviewed, while former Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde is another candidate on the shortlist.

Michael Carrick is expected to remain in charge at least for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea.
