The Argentine broke his metatarsal in April and was ruled out for the remainder of the end of last season.
Martinez returned in time for pre-season, and started the season as first choice centre-back.
However, he looked suspiciously below form and it was clear that Martinez was struggling from the previous injury.
It was decided in October that Martinez would undergo the same operation again in order to fully recover.
United ruled Martinez out for three months, meaning he would return around Christmas.
But Fabrizio Romano says the club are being particularly cautious as they recognise the problem Martinez is suffering from is ‘not normal’.
‘Lisandro Martinez’s injury is not a normal problem,’ said Romano.
‘It’s a big setback for the club and so Man United staff are being very careful with the player.
‘His recovery is going well and Lisandro is doing good, but he’s not ready yet and the club won’t force anything.
‘They will keep waiting until Martínez feels 100 per cent ready to play football again.’
