Bruno Fernandes is set to sign a new five-year contract at Manchester United worth more than £250,000-a-week, with the Portugal star convinced to pen new terms after Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival and the club’s fine transfer window.

Fernandes has been locked in talks with the Red Devils for a number of months about extending his current deal at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old has quickly established himself as one of Manchester United’s most valuable players following his £60m move from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, scoring 44 goals in 85 games for the Premier League club.

The fact Fernandes had not put pen to paper on new contract was beginning to concern United, particularly as La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona had expressed interest in securing his signature.

But The Sun say Fernandes is on the verge of committing his long-term future to Manchester United, with his new five-year deal possibly announced before the end of the month after successful talks.

It is claimed Fernandes was convinced to stay at Old Trafford following United’s impressive summer transfer window in which they re-signed his compatriot Ronaldo and brought world-class players Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho to Manchester.

Fernandes will still be behind Ronaldo, David de Gea and Paul Pogba in the wage order at the Theatre of Dreams, but his fantastic form has earned him a pay rise and another year added to his contract, with the possibility of another 12 months added on in 2026.

The Portuguese star has enjoyed a fine start to the new season, scoring four goals in four Premier League appearances and producing a superb assist for Ronaldo in Tuesday’s Champions League defeat to Young Boys.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side took the lead through Ronaldo in Switzerland but the hosts fought back after Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off, and Jesse Lingard’s wayward pass in stoppage time allowed Jordan Siebatcheu to score the winner.

Asked about Lingard’s mistake, Solskjaer said: ‘We’re humans, every footballer makes mistakes. With Jesse, no footballer likes making mistakes but it’s obviously part and parcel of the game.

‘We’ll learn from it, he’ll learn from it. He’ll pick himself up and be ready to go on Sunday against West Ham.’
