Manchester United are starting to look like a ‘proper’ team, former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy believes.
The Red Devils moved to within two points of fourth place Chelsea, who host Man City on Thursday evening, thanks to Anthony Martial’s hat-trick securing a 3-0 defeat of Sheffield United.
But former Blues defender Cundy reckons Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side need another striker to compete with soon-to-be Premier League champions Liverpool.
Odion Ighalo was brought in on loan earlier this year to provide cover for attacking options Marcus Rashford and the aforementioned Martial, while youngster Mason Greenwood is waiting in the wings.
However, Cundy feels United still need more quality in the final third.
He said on Wednesday’s Sports Bar on talkSPORT: “I still think United need something else. I still feel as though they’re not quite there.
“I think you probably need another centre-forward. I’m not sure Ighalo is going to be the player.
“If you really want to get near Liverpool, that’s the area you’ve got to look at.
“Other than that, Manchester United are starting to look like a proper, proper team.”
Martial netted his first ever hat-trick for United to extend the club’s unbeaten run to 13 matches.
And Solskjaer is thrilled with his number nine’s form.
He said: “I’m very happy for Anthony.
“Of course when you get your hat-trick… it’s just unfortunate he didn’t celebrate with our fans. I thought our performance deserved a win, definitely.
“The third goal was a great goal, but for me the first and the second were better.
“He’s in the box, ready to go. We have worked on that, getting in the box in that situation more often.
“At the near post he showed composure and I think as I said the first goal was vital the way he turns and gets himself into a position to score from Marcus Rashford’s cross, very pleased with that.
“He’s getting more and more into those position he could have had one at Spurs a great turn and finish and a great save he’s in good form.”
