Teddy Sheringham believes there is ‘absolutely no chance’ Cristiano Ronaldo will play for Manchester United again, after saying he does not respect manager Erik ten Hag and that he feels betrayed by the club.
The veteran striker asked for an interview with Piers Morgan and aired some controversial views, saying he feels that people at the club are trying to force him out.
Sheringham feels that there is no way back for Ronaldo, even if he wanted to find one, and that the 37-year-old has played his last game for the club.
‘No chance. absolutely no chance. He cannot play for Manchester United again, not after this and it sounds like there’s more to come,’ Sheringham told talkSPORT.
‘You cannot attack your football club and expect everything to be hunky dory next week when you come back from the World Cup, absolutely no chance.’
While Ronaldo made a number of headline-grabbing statements, it was the lack of respect for his manager that Sheringham thinks is the biggest issue.
‘He says he doesn’t respect Ten Hag, there’s the problem straight away, that’s the main issue,’ said the former United striker. ‘If you don’t have respect for the manager it doesn’t matter what else you do.’
Sheringham says he’s surprised by Ronaldo feeling disrespected and betrayed, and does not believe anyone at Old Trafford is trying to get rid of him.
‘I’m very surprised,’ said Sheringham. ‘Obviously Cristiano has got his own way of thinking. But when you join a football club, the football people wnat you to produce your best football moments, that’s all it is really.
‘I’d be very surprised if he’s being forced out. Disrespected, I don’t know. If you’re still performing at the hightest level, people respect you.
‘If you’re doing things in and around the football club that you shouldn’t be, like walking off down the tunnel when you should be part of the team, that’s when people lose respect for you. I think it works hand in hand.
‘You’ve got to realise yourself that he’s not 29 anymore, he’s past his best and you have to understand that you’re going to be used sparingly.
‘He wants to be the main man, I know he’s fit and looks great, but it comes to all of us at some stage, that you’re past your best.’
