Paul Scholes appeared to welcome in a new era of Manchester United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men swept aside Brighton in one of their most eye-catching performances since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure way back in 2013.

Bruno Fernandes has had a tremendous impact since his arrival from Sporting in the January transfer window and the elegant £47million midfielder was once again the star of the show with a dazzling individual display at the Amex Stadium.

But it was United’s homegrown talent, Mason Greenwood, who broke the deadlock as he deceived Lewis Dunk with some exquisite footwork before driving the ball past Mat Ryan at his near post.

Fernandes’ deflected effort sent the visitors into the break with a two-goal lead and the Portuguese netted his fifth of the Premier League campaign in the 50th minute, casually volleying home after a slick team move involving Nemanja Matic and Greenwood.

The Red Devils’ 3-0 victory extended their unbeaten streak to 15 matches in all competitions and ensured they cranked up the pressure on Chelsea in the race for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

After the final whistle, Solskjaer credited Fernandes with bringing a ‘winning mentality’ to United and Scholes – who many have likened the Portugal international to in recent weeks – has been equally impressed with the team since his arrival.

The legendary former midfielder has been an outspoken critic of United since Ferguson’s exit seven years ago but allowed himself some optimism in the wake of Tuesday night’s performance.

‘Well then… I think we have a football team,’ Scholes wrote on his Instagram page with a picture of Fernandes celebrating.

Gary Neville – who was on commentary duty with Sky Sports on the south coast – pointed out how rare it was that Scholes’ gave such high praise in response to the post.

‘Takes a lot to impress him!!’ Neville said.

Before last night’s match, Neville suggested Solskjaer’s side were still ‘three of four’ signings away from being able to seriously compete with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

‘This team is a lot more likeable than the one which was here two years ago when you thought United’s recruitment had lost direction,’ the ex-United and England said.

‘But l would urge some caution. Manchester United are sixth in the Premier League.

‘They have a squad which is improving with young players.

‘But there is still some work to be done in the transfer market to get this team to a title-winning team – which has to be Manchester United’s ambition.

‘There is more needed and a lot more needed. Three or four players of high quality of the Bruno Fernandes type to get them to the point where they can challenge.’
