Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire admits he ‘could have signed elsewhere’, with the Red Devils in disarray.

The England defender joined United in an £80million deal from Leicester City in 2019 and he rejected Manchester City in order to move to Old Trafford, despite holding extensive talks with Pep Guardiola.

Maguire was made club captain less than six months after his move to the Theatre of Dreams but he’s come under severe criticism this term for his performances, which have suffered a dramatic dip.

Widespread reports claim there’s deep-rooted divisions in the United dressing room, with players questioning the influence on Cristiano Ronaldo and the suitability of Ralf Rangnick to the club.

Maguire has attempted to bring his team-mates together by issuing a rallying cry but the defender also took the opportunity to reveal he could have moved elsewhere instead of joining United, in comments that are unlikely to go down well with supporters.

‘I came here to win titles. I could have signed elsewhere but I wanted to be at United and help get them back to the winning ways that the club had in the Sir Alex era,’ said Maguire.

‘It will come if we all stay together. I grew up idolising the likes of Wayne, Rio and Vidic and I want to repeat what they achieved. I’m privileged to be captain and I’ve got a responsibility to lead the players and turn things round.

‘I’m the captain and leader in the dressing room, and I’ve had private conversations with the players and the management which will remain private. Make no mistake about it, I’m here for the fight and I know my team-mates are.

‘I expect them to be and if they’re not then – like I said – there’s something wrong. We have a big squad. Of course, not all players will always be happy as they are not playing but that’s football and we all have to remain professional.’
