Erik ten Hag has compared Marcus Rashford to Kylian Mbappe with the Manchester United boss desperate to keep the forward at Old Trafford.
Rashford has enjoyed an impressive return to form under ten Hag this season, leading the club’s goal scoring charts with eight goals this term having bagged three for England in an impressive World Cup campaign.
The 25-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of the season and while United have the option to extend that by another 12 months, Rashford would be free to start negotiating with foreign clubs as of 1 January.
Paris Saint-Germain would be among them with their club president last week confirming their interest.
Rashford is set to have a crucial role to play under ten Hag, with the Dutchman insisting his ability to burst through the opposition defence is among the best in the world, drawing the comparison with current PSG and France star Mbappe.
‘From the first moment, I recognised huge potential,’ ten Hag said.
‘And now to get out the potential, I believe when Marcus’s positioning is on the back of the defending line, there is almost no better player in the world.
‘There is Mbappé in this moment, a type like him. But when he [Rashford]’s getting in that position [on the back of the defensive line], he’s great and you see he’s really improved also out of possession.
‘One of the first things I said to him was ‘come to training and smile’, that gives you energy when you are happy.
‘Marcus was one from the start who came with a smile to Carrington, from the first moment, it really was a joy to work with him.
‘I recognise his talent. I think he is happier off the pitch too.’
Diogo Dalot is another United star who is nearing the end of his contract but as is he case with Rashford, the club have the option to extend his deal by 12 months.
Ten Hag also confirmed over the weekend the club are in the process of activating those options.
