Arsenal are more optimistic of signing Gabriel Jesus than his Manchester City teammate Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Mikel Arteta is lining up a double raid on his former club as he looks to make significant additions to a squad which faltered during the closing weeks of the season and missed out on Champions League qualification.

The Gunners lost two of their final three league fixtures, against Tottenham and Newcastle, and were ultimately forced to settle for the consolation prize of a place in Europe’s second tier club competition.

A return to European competition, however, will stretch an already paper thin squad to the limit but Arsenal remain confident they have the finances required to make the signings needed to kick on again next season.

According to the Telegraph, Arsenal are optimistic of winning the race to sign Jesus who is set to enter the final year of his contract.

City value the Brazil international at £55million and although Arsenal are reluctant to pay that fee, reports claim the 25-year-old is likely to end up at the Emirates where he would be a first choice starter, instead of Spurs who are also monitoring his situation.

According to the Telegraph, meanwhile, City would not stand in the way of Zinchenko departing but would require a ‘substantial fee’ for player so highly regarded by Pep Guardiola.

The Ukraine international’s versatility has convinced Arteta to make a move for the 25-year-old who could offer cover at left-back for Kieran Tierney as well as operate across midfield where Arsenal are particularly short of options.

Zinchenko still has two years left on his contract but could be minded to leave should City be successful in their pursuit of Marc Cucurella, the Brighton left-back who is also wanted at Chelsea and valued at around £45million.
