Manchester City are winning the race to sign Villarreal defender Pau Torres, with Pep Guardiola’s side ‘well positioned’ to sign the Spaniard.

The 24-year-old is widely recognised as one of the finest centre-backs in Europe after a scintillating season with Villarreal last term, which culminated in the La Liga side beating Manchester United in the Europa League final.

United had been the frontrunners to sign Torres before they pulled off a £39m move for Raphael Varane and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is now satisfied with his options in defence.

While Pep Guardiola boasts the likes of Ruben Dias, John Stones and Nathan Ake at the Etihad, Aymeric Laporte is considering his future at the club.

Marca therefore claim that City are keeping a close eye on Torres and that contact was made between the two parties earlier this summer over a move to the north-west.

Torres has a release clause of around £51m in his contract and Villarreal will not listen to offers for below that.

Spurs made a move for Torres in the summer transfer window but the Spaniard was unwilling to move to north London and will only leave Villarreal for a club in the Champions League.
