Jude Bellingham is the midfielder Manchester United want most, but that signing is not even a possibility until the summer, according to reports.

The Red Devils want to add reinforcements to their midfield as soon as possible, with the likes of Fred, Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay in some need of upgrading and Paul Pogba’s contract expiring at the end of the season.

They have been linked with players this month, with Borussia Monchengladbach’s Denis Zakaria thought to be a target. but The Athletic report that there are no advanced talks to sign anyone in January, in midfield or elsewhere.

However, bid summer moves are much more likely and the same report states that Bellingham is the first name on United’s midfield shopping list, with Declan Rice also a target.

Both deals would be too colossal to pull off in January, and may prove too difficult to do in the summer as well, but the Red Devils will look to pursue at least one of them.

While they could finance a move for either England international, if United fail to qualify for the Champions League this season, then they could be at a disadvantage, with other clubs also interested in the midfield pair.

Liverpool have also been linked with a bid for Bellingham, while Chelsea have long been seen as suitors for Rice, while Manchester City have also been linked with both.

If a midfielder is to arrive before the end of the January window it is likely to be Amadou Haidara from RB Leipzig, a player Ralf Rangnick is keen to bring in.

They face surprise competition from Newcastle United, though, who want to capitalise on United’s ponderous nature in the transfer market and beat them to the Mali international.
