Manchester United will reportedly not stand in Cristiano Ronaldo’s way this summer if he expresses a desire to leave the club.

The Portuguese’s fairytale return to Old Trafford hasn’t quite worked out as planned so far and there are no guarantees United will finish in the top four this season given recent performances.

Despite Ronaldo enjoying his time at United, reports suggest the 37-year-old will consider leaving the club in the summer if they don’t secure Champions League football for next season.

The Mirror claim if that is the case, United won’t stand in his way and will therefore accept his transfer demands to move on.

The report also suggests some at the club are now starting to view Ronaldo’s return as an ‘error of judgement’ driven by commercial factors and to avoid him joining rivals Manchester City.

Should Ronaldo want to leave at the end of the season, United will look to claw back some of the initial £13million they paid Juventus last summer.

Ronaldo still tops United’s goalscoring charts with 15 goals to his name this season but the forward has come in for criticism for his lack of pressing and poor attitude in defeats at times.

He’s also been the subject of speculation around Harry Maguire’s future as captain with reports suggesting there is a power struggle between himself and the England international.

However, Maguire has denied any rift in the dressing room which was echoed by manager Ralf Rangnick in the lead up to Sunday’s crunch clash with Leeds.

‘Well to start with, I must say that this is absolutely nonsense,’ said Rangnick.

‘I have never spoken with any player about a possible change of captaincy, Harry is fully aware of that and so is Cristiano and all the other players.

‘This has never been an issue for me, it’s me who decides who’s the captain and therefore there’s no need for me to speak about that with any other person.

‘Harry is our captain and he will stay our captain until the end of the season and there is nothing else to say to add on to that.’

United currently occupy fourth spot in the Premier League table and can’t afford to drop points against Leeds with Arsenal now one point behind them after their win over Brentford and having games in hand on them.
