Several people have claimed they become unwell after an event held at Old Trafford while the club have yet to make a comment, The Athletic have reported.
It is thought that United are also conducting their own internal probe to determine the cause of the incident and if the symptoms experienced by the guests were related to what they consumed on the club’s premises.
According to the NHS website, symptoms of food poisoning include nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps, a high temperature of 38C or above and feeling generally unwell – such as feeling tired or having aches and chills.
The symptoms usually start within a few days of eating the food that caused the infection but sometimes they start after a few hours or not for a few weeks.
United’s food hygiene rating is currently the highest grade achievable but could take a knock depending on the results of the two investigations.
The nature of the event held at Old Trafford is unknown but is believed to have taken place in recent months.
United may have to spend significantly on improving protocols as they draw substantial revenue from hosting events and providing hospitality.
It is reported that the incident could also impact the hospitality rates the club can charge.
News of the alleged scandal comes as Sir Jim Ratcliffe is set to have a £1.3bn investment in the club ratified in the coming weeks, which will see him take a 25 per cent stake in the Red Devils.
