Spanish giants Real Madrid are monitoring Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes, according to reports in Portugal.

Fernandes is currently out in Qatar for the World Cup as Fernando Santos’ side look to lift another trophy after winning Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League.

The 28-year-old has been at Old Trafford since 2020, has scored 53 goals across 146 games for United and is under contract until 2026.

According to Portuguese outlet Record, Fernandes is happy at United but has not closed the door on a move if it means taking his career to the next level.

They report that Real Madrid have wanted to sign Fernandes since his days at Sporting Lisbon and have reignited their interest in him.

Real Madrid are the current champions of both Europe and Spain having won last season’s La Liga title and lifting the 2021-22 Champions League trophy.

United, meanwhile, have not won a trophy since 2017 when they lifted the Europa League under Jose Mourinho.

There could now be a period of change for the Red Devils with the Glazer family looking to sell the club.

New owners may even look to replace manager Erik ten Hag – who only arrived in the summer – former United defender Paul Parker has warned.

Chelsea changed owners in the summer and by September had sacked boss Thomas Tuchel and brought in Graham Potter as head coach.

‘[The] Glazers’ time in Man United has really been dramatic,’ Parker told Futbin. ‘No one realised how bad it was going to end when Sir Alex Ferguson left.

‘[The] Glazers have been an absolute living nightmare, especially after Robin Van Persie and Sir Alex Ferguson left.

‘The thing I’m most concerned about is that the new owners might want to bring in their own manager and if that happens, Man United has to start from scratch again.’

United return to action on December 21 when they host Burnley in the Carabao Cup.
