A statement from the Ferguson family on Friday read: ‘We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing yesterday of Lady Cathy Ferguson.
‘The family asks for privacy at this time.’
Sir Alex and Lady Cathy were married for 57 years and the former United manager has said after his retirement that his wife provided a ‘bedrock of both stability and encouragement’ throughout his career.
As a tribute to Lady Cathy, United’s players are wearing black armbands against Brentford on Saturday afternoon, while the flags at Old Trafford are being flown at half mast.
On Friday evening, United’s Women’s side also wore black armbands in their 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
United’s statement on Friday read: ‘Everyone at Manchester United sends our heartfelt condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family on the passing of Lady Cathy.
‘Lady Cathy was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a tower of strength for Sir Alex throughout his career.’
