Manchester United chiefs will hold monthly transfer meetings with Ralf Rangnick over the course of the remainder of the season in a bid to narrow their list of potential midfield targets down to 15 players.

United resisted the temptation to add to their squad in the January transfer window given that none of their primary targets were available and were even prepared to let Donny van de Beek join Everton on loan.

Rangnick will also be without the services of Mason Greenwood for the foreseeable future but, regardless of the 20-year-old’s fate following his arrest last week, United view strengthening their midfield as this summer’s overriding priority.

According to ESPN, United want to cut down the list of possible new additions to 15 players, before reducing that down to 10.

Rangnick is a huge admirer of Red Bull Leipzig midfielder Amadou Haidara who is almost certain to depart in the summer, while United maintain long-term interest in West Ham’s Declan Rice.

The England international has so far rejected several offers from the Hammers to extend his contract but will make a third attempt to tie him down to a lucrative deal at the end of the season.

United, however, are certain to test the water but face competition from the likes of Rice’s boyhood club Chelsea and Manchester City whose manager, Pep Guardiola, has gone on record to praise the box-to-box midfielder in the past.

Rangnick’s need for a midfield reinforcements will intensify depending on whether or not Paul Pogba remains at Old Trafford beyond the summer. The France international is due to make his comeback in the FA Cup against Middlesbrough this evening and his new manager has urged the club’s record purchase to prove his worth.

He said: ‘I’m happy to have him back in the squad as I said he might be playing from the start tomorrow. I see his best possible position for me as one of the central midfield positions as either an 8 or 10, but the way we’re currently playing I’d rather see him in the 8 position but we’ll have to see, it’s up to him now.

‘His contract is expiring in the summer and if, in the end, he would like to stay or go somewhere else he has to show up. It’s not only in the interest of us as a club, but it’s in his personal interest that he plays and performs at the highest possible level in the next couple of weeks.

‘We haven’t spoken about that [his future] at all so far, not only about Paul’s situation but also other players with contracts expiring in the summer, we also didn’t speak about new players so far.’
