Manchester United’s players are reportedly becoming concerned by David de Gea’s declining performances with the Spaniard also failing to impress in training recently.

De Gea’s place in the team is under threat after he allowed a tame shot from Mason Mount to slip through his grasp in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea, while he has made a number of other high-profile gaffes since the season restart.

Roy Keane ripped the 29-year-old apart in the very first game back after he let Steven Bergwijn’s effort in against Spurs, while more soft goals followed against Everton and Watford.

Now The Times report that some United players are ‘worried’ about how many costly mistakes De Gea has made over the past few seasons, with his form a source of concern within the squad.

To make matters worse, that form has carried over into training sessions too, with his performances at Carrington considered ‘not up to scratch’.

De Gea’s latest error against Chelsea has even prompted suggestions he could be dropped for Wednesday’s clash with West Ham, with Sergio Romero coming in instead.

Longer term, United have Dean Henderson as an option, with the youngster thriving in his first full season in the Premier League on loan at Sheffield United, though he wants assurances over his first-team opportunities if he is to stay at Old Trafford next season.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer refused to entertain questions about De Gea’s form at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, insisting that he still supports his number one.

Asked how De Gea has reacted to his display against Chelsea, Solskjaer said bluntly: ‘This is not going to become a David de Gea press conference.

‘We’re just going to stick together, we’ve got two games and we’re just going to focus on that. David is mentally strong enough to know that his job is to perform in training the next day and then be ready for the games.’

Probed further on the noise surrounding the keeper, Solskjaer added: ‘That’s your job to talk about and write about, and my job is to prepare the team for West Ham. And that’s what we’re doing.

‘We’re just focusing on that one, we’re not going to talk about individuals because no-one here is going to feel that we put more pressure on them.’
