Manchester United intend to hold a friendly behind closed doors over the international break, in a bid to help Marcus Rashford fully recover match fitness after his shoulder operation.

The 23-year-old is yet to feature this season after having shoulder surgery over the summer, attempting to fix a problem he has been playing with since November last year.

Instead of continuing to play through the pain Rashford opted to sort it out and is now hopeful that the issue will be behind him.

However, he must now regain match sharpness having not played since the final of Euro 2020 with England and the Red Devils are willing to put on an extra game to help him do just that.

Manchester United host Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday and then Everton in the Premier Leageu on Saturday before the international break.

Rashford will not be available for either of the next two games, but should be able to take part in a friendly during the break, which the Red Devils are currently organising, according to The Athletic.

If all goes well for the forward then he is likely to be available to feature when United travel to Leicester City in the Premier League on 16 October.

Rashford tweeted on Monday about his recovery, hoping that he would be allowed to return to contact training, having already re-joined his teammates in training last week.

‘Happy Monday,’ he wrote. ‘I see the doctor on Friday for a consultation. All being well, I will get the green to join in with contact training again.’

He added in another tweet: ‘light I suppose I was so happy to tell everybody I missed a word.’

After three defeats in their last four games, Manchester United fans will be delighted to see Rashford return as soon as possible.
