Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has asked executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to complete a deal for Dortmund superstar Jadon Sancho in August so that the winger can have a full pre-season at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have tracked Sancho for the last 18 months but their attempts to sign the 20-year-old failed last summer after the club finished sixth in the Premier League.

Sancho, though, is homesick in Germany and he’s keen on joining United this summer provided the club can finish in the top four or win the Europa League, which would give them entry to next season’s Champions League.

United had been confident of signing Sancho before the pandemic hit and they believe Dortmund need to significantly drop their £120m valuation of the England star if they’re to complete a deal this summer.

The Red Devils remain intent on signing Sancho but they’re willing to bide their time as they believe the market will correct itself, which would allow them to sign the winger for a more acceptable fee.

However, with the window set to close in October, that could mean United would play the first three weeks of the season without Sancho.

That’s not something that Solskjaer is willing to accept as the Daily Star claim he’s told Woodward that he wants Sancho to sign for the club in August.

Though United could still be competing in the Europa League deep into August, Solskjaer will have one eye on the start of the Premier League season which is set to resume in mid-September.

Such a short turnaround means clubs will have to hit the ground running and the Norwegian is wary that United’s rivals like Chelsea and Liverpool will not have to deal with playing in Europe, meaning they’ll have a full pre-season to prepare for the next campaign.

The report claims United are willing to table a take-it-or-leave-it £80m bid for Sancho and they’re confident that Dortmund will accept.

After that, Solskjaer will target a centre-back and a central midfielder as he looks to continue his overhaul at Old Trafford.
