United survived a monumental scare and an astonishing comeback from Coventry City to reach the FA Cup final, where they will face Manchester City.
Ten Hag’s side appeared in complete control as Bruno Fernandes added United’s third on the hour mark following Scott McTominay’s opener midway through the first half and Harry Maguire’s header on the stroke of half-time.
But Ellis Simms pulled one back for Coventry before Callum O’Hare’s deflected strike and Haji Wright’s 95th-minute penalty drew the Championship side level.
Both sides hit the woodwork in extra-time and Coventry thought they had snatched a sensational winner late on only for Wright’s goal to be ruled out for offside after a VAR check.
That meant the semi-final tie went to penalties and United progressed despite missing their first effort to reach back-to-back FA Cup finals.
A shock and embarrassing defeat to Coventry would surely have led to Ten Hag’s dismissal but Shearer cannot see the Dutchman continuing in the role even if United go on to lift their 13th FA Cup trophy.
‘I think the future of the Manchester United manager is already determined,’ England legend Shearer said on the Rest Is Football podcast. ‘Even if they win the FA Cup, I think he’s gone.
‘I don’t think it matters if they win the cup, for his future. That might be sad, that might be wrong, but I just get the feeling that even winning the FA Cup is not going to be enough for him.
‘When you look at the players and where they are in the league compared to where they want to be, I think he’s already gone.
‘I don’t know it for a fact, it’s just a guess, a hunch, but I just get the feeling that the decision is already made.
‘We know how football works, they’ve got new owners, new director of football, it just tells you that a new manager is incoming.’
While Manchester United were inadvertently involved in a FA Cup epic against Coventry, holders Manchester City reached another Wembley final with a 1-0 win over Chelsea on Saturday.
