Manchester United hope to have Lisandro Martinez available for their game against Brentford following the international break.
The Argentina international has endured an injury-hit second season at Old Trafford, sidelined with a knee problem in early February just four games after returning from surgery on a foot injury.
The centre-half has not featured since limping off in the 3-0 win over West Ham United but was unexpectedly called up to the Argentina squad on Tuesday ahead of international friendlies against El Salvador and Costa Rica.
Martinez will not play in either of those games, however, called up to finish his recovery around his international teammates and be part of the camp as Argentina prepare for their Copa America campaign this summer.
The injury Martinez suffered against West Ham was not as bad as first feared – spraining a medial collateral ligament in his knee with United placing a six-to-eight week timescale on his return.
Martinez has progressed well in his bid to return to full fitness in time for the season run-in with The Athletic reporting he could now make his return against Brentford on 30 March.
United take on Liverpool in a huge FA Cup quarter-final showdown at Old Trafford on Sunday which Martinez will not be involved in.
They take on Brentford in west London in their first game back after March’s international break.
Martinez joined United from Ajax in the summer of 2022 in a deal worth £47million, reuniting with Erik ten Hag in Manchester.
He was one of United’s most important players as they clinched a fourth place finish and the Carabao Cup, making 45 appearances across all competitions but missing the final nine games after suffering a metatarsal injury.
The Argentine underwent surgery and was fit again for United’s pre-season campaign but suffered a recurrence of that injury in September.
He has been limited to just nine starting appearances this season.
