Both Premier League sides have taken a keen interest in the 16-year-old Croatian striker, who is set to have a number of options over his next destination.
United and German club RB Leipzig appear to be the current frontrunners and are actively in negotiations over a move for the youngster, according to reports.
La Liga giants Barcelona as well as Italian duo AC Milan and Juventus are all also believed to be keen on signing Klapija.
Klapija is expected to leave Croatian side NK Kustosija soon as he seeks a new club.
He was born in North Hempstead, USA and started his career in the academy of Major League Soccer side New York City FC – who have the same owners as Manchester City and are in the City Football Group.
Klapija was capped for United States U16s but then moved back to Croatia with his family.
The teenager joined Dinamo Zagreb and was expected to sign his first professional contract with them, before joining Kustosija instead, who have developed a reputation for handing opportunities to young players.
United, meanwhile, are working on a number of deals ahead of the transfer deadline and have been strongly linked to Sofyan Amrabat.
The Red Devils also want to bring in a new No.2 goalkeeper and are closing in on the signing of Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo in a deal worth £34.1m.
