Roy Keane says there was ‘no logic’ to Bruno Fernandes’ shocking miss in Manchester United’s FA Cup defeat to Middlesbrough.

Premier League giants United crashed out of the FA Cup in the fourth round after losing a penalty shootout to Championship side Boro.

The Red Devils took control at Old Trafford through Jadon Sancho’s first-half opener but missed a number of chances – including a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty – before the visitors equalised through Matt Crooks.

After Middlesbrough drew level, Fernandes was offered a glorious chance to restore United’s lead when he intercepted goalkeeper Joe Lumley’s dangerous pass, but the Portugal star dragged his effort onto the post.

The FA Cup tie went to penalties and Middlesbrough held their nerve to emerge victorious, with young striker Anthony Elanga missing the decisive spot-kick after 15 successful efforts.

Former Red Devils captain Keane was shocked by United’s wastefulness in front of goal during the cup defeat and says Fernandes’ miss in particular defied logic.

‘That miss from Bruno Fernandes, he has to score,’ Keane told ITV. ‘There is no logic to that miss. He has got to hit the target.

‘This morning before they had even travelled to the game if you had said to the manager and staff these are the chances you are going to get tonight at Old Trafford, you’d be thinking we’ll take these all day we are bound to get through.’

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick was ‘incredible disappointed’ by his team’s defeat and said Boro’s equaliser should have been ruled out after Duncan Watmore clearly handled the ball in the build-up.

‘We should have won and killed off the game in the first half,’ Rangnick said. ‘Crossbar, post, missed penalty and numerous chances.

‘It should have been 2-0 or 3-0. We conceded a goal which I don’t understand why it stood. He controlled it with his hand.

‘In the moment when they scored, it was clear that VAR would not allow this goal to stand. We were not well positioned in that moment, too open and allowed them the counter, we should have won the game.

‘Anthony Elanga, anyone can imagine how he us, he is shattered and absolutely disappointed. It was the eighth penalty which had all converted.’

Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder, meanwhile, said: ‘We are delighted, the opposition will be wondering how they did not progress, it is the magic of the cup, we rode our luck, took our chances and took it to a shootout.

‘You can’t do anything when it goes to penalties, you just hope they are positive and they took a fabulous approach. You give yourself an opportunity to witness scenes like tonight, 10,000 fans coming down the road and going away happy.

‘Dean Henderson is a good goalkeeper, I know he is about and saved a few penalties when we worked together but a fabulous night for the football club and why fans around the world enjoy the FA Cup.

‘You cannot get any better than winning at Old Trafford on a Friday night.’
