Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick says Arsenal have a ‘great chance’ of securing Champions League football after enjoying a ‘terrific run’ under Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal’s season threatened to implode last month as the Gunners lost three successive games to Crystal Palace, Brighton and Southampton.

But Arteta’s side got their top-four challenge back on track with three wins in the space of 12 days, beating Chelsea, Manchester United and most recently West Ham.

With Tottenham only winning one of their last three games and United going three straight matches without a win, Arsenal have taken charge of the top-four race, sitting two and eight points clear of Spurs and United respectively.

‘They’ve had a terrific run,’ ex-Manchester United and England midfielder Carrick told Premier League productions after Arsenal’s 1-0 win at West Ham on Sunday.

‘People ask the question, would you rather have the points in the bag or would you rather be chasing and without so much pressure?

‘I would much rather be in a position where it’s in your own hands, 100 per cent. And that’s where Arsenal have found themselves so credit to them that have put themselves in this position.

‘West Ham was not an easy game for them but they got the win. It gives them a great chance now.’

Arsenal face struggling Leeds United next weekend, before a potentially huge clash against north London rivals Tottenham on May 12. The Gunners finish the season with fixtures against Newcastle United and Everton.

David Seaman, a legend at Arsenal, believes fans of the Gunners can now ‘believe in the process’ with Arteta putting the club on course for the Champions League.

‘I think Arteta has won the fans over now,’ Seaman told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast. ‘He talked a lot about believing in the process but fans were asking: “What process?”

‘Now, you can really see what’s happening. He’s tried to bring youth through and blend with a bit of experience, and that’s been great to see.’
