Nevertheless, he made his international debut at the start of the year and will now travel to Qatar alongside former United striker Edinson Cavani.
Two other Premier League players have been included in Uruguay’s squad, namely Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez and Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.
Other names familiar to English fans include former Liverpool stars Luis Suarez and Sebastian Coates, and ex-Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira.
It was thought that Pellestri could have made his United debut in their Carabao Cup tie against Aston Villa on Thursday, but he was left on the bench as Erik ten Hag’s side came from behind twice to win 4-2.
Last week, his agent claimed that Pellestri’s time at Old Trafford was coming to an end, with the player set to seek a move away in January.
Edgardo Lasalvia told ESPN Uruguay: ‘I think with a good World Cup, as we think he is going to have, his departure [from United] is imminent.’
Uruguay have a strong history with the World Cup, having hosted and won the inaugural finals back in 1930, triumphing again in 1950.
In Qatar, they have been drawn in Group H against Portugal, Ghana and South Korea, with their campaign kicking-off against the latter on November 24.
