Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should play Nemanja Matic over Fred, says Paul Ince

Paul Ince wants Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to start Nemanja Matic in order to provide a better balance to his Manchester United team.

Matic has been limited to just three Premier League starts for the Red Devils so far this season, with the pairing of Fred and Scott McTominay preferred on most occasions.

But Fred has come under criticism following several below-par performances in recent weeks, during a run in which United have won just three of their last eight matches in all competitions.

United legend Ince has urged Solskjaer to ditch both McTominay and the Brazil international, in favour of Matic.

‘It’s all about number fours, number six, number eights – sod all that! Box-to-box; you’d defend, you’d protect your back four and you go and try and score goals,’ Ince told Genting Casino.

‘I’m not sure whether Fred and McTominay work, I know Ole keeps pursuing with it but I’m not sure it works as a tandem, and I’d like to see Ole maybe try something else in there.

‘I think when you play in midfield you can play how you want to play, you can play three as an umbrella, you can play one with two sitting, two with one sitting, there’s plenty of ways you can do it.

‘As long as the person who’s sitting knows how to play that role, and the only one who knows how to play that role is Matic, he’s the only one who can play that role, OK.

‘Now, whether you want to put Donny [van de Beek] on the left side, and a Bruno [Fernandes], or a Pogba, you can mix it around, but if it was me, I’d be playing Matic, I’d be playing Pogba on the left, and I’d play Bruno off the right.’

United will be hoping to put their recent poor run of form behind them when they host second-placed Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.
