Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag awkwardly faced boos from fans as he addressed the crowd on the pitch after their 3-2 win over Newcastle.

United won at Old Trafford on Wednesday in their final Premier League home match of the season in a boost to their hopes of European qualification.

The Red Devils still have one top-flight fixture remaining – away to Brighton on Sunday – but with no more home games left, Ten Hag decided to give a speech.

The Dutchman, who has endured massive speculation over his future at the club amid a horrific second season in charge, was booed as he spoke to the crowd.

Ten Hag ignored the boos, which came as he thanked fans for their support, and continued with his speech as the boos were eventually replaced by applause.

In his speech, Ten Hag admitted that the season had been ‘difficult’ with United left needing Newcastle to drop points on the final day to clinch seventh.

United can qualify for the Europa League if they beat Manchester City in the upcoming FA Cup final but if they lose – and fail to finish seventh – they will miss out on Europe altogether.

Ten Hag promised that United will give ‘everything’ to win the FA Cup, which earned some cheers, and labelled United supporters ‘the best fans in the world’.

United legend Wayne Rooney watched the speech as a pundit for Sky Sports and has urged his old club to stick with the manager.

‘The club has been in transition for 10 years,’ Rooney said. ‘You can’t keep getting rid of managers and starting again.

‘They’re going to have to give a manager time to rebuild the club to get it back to competing for top trophies.’

United supporters have been reacting to the boos on social media with @Vict0rMeldrew posting on X: ‘Those people in the crowd who booed ten Hag gave his speech, should give their heads a wobble. Totally disrespectful.’

Meanwhile, some United fans have argued that the boos were in fact coming from Newcastle fans in the away section.
