Bastian Schweinsteiger has told Erik ten Hag how to unlock the ‘immense potential’ in Manchester United forward Anthony Martial.

Martial has spent the best part of a decade at Old Trafford, scoring 83 goals in 276 appearances for the Red Devils following a big-money move from Monaco in 2015.

The Frenchman’s United career appeared to be coming to an end as he spent the second-half of last season on loan at Sevilla, but Martial’s first-team prospects improved once Ten Hag arrived at the Theatre of Dreams improved from Ajax.

Martial impressed Ten Hag in pre-season and started more than one game ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo before the World Cup break, though his reoccurring injury issues continued to be a problem.

Schweinsteiger believes his former Manchester United team-mate Martial can be ‘one of the best’ and has advised Ten Hag on how to get the most out of him.

‘His potential is immense,’ Schweinsteiger said of Martial in an interview with MUTV. ‘I remember very well when he arrived at United, and he scored the goal against Liverpool in a special way.

‘With him, you need to give him confidence. But you also need to push him sometimes, you know, and then he can be one of the best players.

‘But he has to understand that first, you know, and that’s the job of the coaches and also the team-mates.

‘If you play with someone like him, you want to see the quality of this player all the time. You expect it because you know what this player is able to do.

‘When I played with him, my goal was always to put him in the right position with the ball.

‘So to give him the ball in the right moments where he can show his abilities the most. Like one against one, one against two, with the ball, facing the opponents’ goal.

‘They are the moments he is waiting for, and then he’s actually producing. At the end of the day, what matters for him is goals and assists.’

Martial scored two goals and made two assists in five Premier League appearances before the mid-season break for the World Cup and looks set to have a key role when the campaign resumes following the departure of Ronaldo.
