Bastian Schweinsteiger has revealed his admiration for Manchester United midfielders Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro.
The highly-decorated German spent two years at Old Trafford towards the end of a remarkable career that saw him win eight Bundesliga titles and the Champions League with Bayern Munich and the World Cup with Germany.
Schweinsteiger described Fernandes as ‘the brain’ of the operation at United and says his work ethic is an underappreciated part of his game.
Fernandes has been one of Manchester United’s most important players since his £67m move from Sporting Lisbon in 2020 and enjoyed a productive World Cup until Portugal were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Morocco.
‘I call him “the brain”,’ Schweinsteiger said of Fernandes in an interview with United’s official website.
‘Like he literally moves so smart on the field and do you know what, you actually like kind of underestimate [his work rate].
‘Of course, he’s making his assists, or he is scoring the goals and makes great passes but Bruno Fernandes, he is working very hard.
‘His numbers are high [for the distance] he runs on the field, and I really like watching him because whatever he does, it makes sense.’
Schweinsteiger has also heaped praise on Brazil star Casemiro, who joined Manchester United from Real Madrid last summer.
Casemiro won five Champions League titles at the Bernabeu and will hope to lift more silverware at Old Trafford following Brazil’s World Cup exit.
‘Casemiro is one of the best, definitely in that position, at the moment,’ Schweinsteiger said.
‘He sniffs the danger quite well and he is a good passer. He scored an amazing goal against Switzerland [in the World Cup] as well and he is a very important piece for the Brazilian national team.
‘He is one of the leaders there, and you can see that, and you can feel that and, yeah, I hope he can bring the sharpness back on the Manchester United field as well.’
Manchester United, who are currently fifth in the Premier League, return to action on December 21 with an EFL Cup clash against Burnley.
