Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez both struck in the second half as Manchester City saw off Chelsea 2-0 last night to book their place in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.

Chelsea teenager Lewis Hall had a golden chance from close range just before half-time but shot straight at the legs of City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.

City’s recent record in the competition has been prolific, with six triumphs in 11 seasons, and they will fancy their chances again this time round.

City stepped it up a gear after the break and a deflected Jack Grealish shot was well saved low down by Edouard Mendy.

The hosts struck eight minutes into the half, as Mahrez’s floated free-kick evaded the Chelsea wall and flew into the net.

Soon after it was 2-0, with Alvarez finding Mahrez with a lovely pass. Mahrez fired in a low shot, that was palmed by Mendy straight into the path of Alvarez to slot home.

Derby acquitted themselves extremely well against Liverpool at Anfield. Layton Stewart, making his debut for the Reds, shot over the crossbar from Fabio Carvalho’s fine cross.
