Liverpool can’t allow Mohamed Salah’s contract situation to drag on much longer with the likes of Manchester City able to double his wages.

That’s the view of former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell, who feels Liverpool need to blow up their own wage structure in order to tie him down to a new deal.

Salah’s current contract runs out in the summer of 2023 but concerns are growing among some parts of the Reds fanbase as to why there has been no real progress given other players such as Jordan Henderson and Andy Robertson have recently agreed new deals.

The Egyptian is in the form of his life having scored nine goals so far this season and recently reached the 100 Premier League goals mark, but there has been little update on his contract situation.

While City have not directly been linked with a move for the forward, talkSPORT host Adrian Durham recently suggested the club could afford to pay him what he wants.

And Campbell believes Liverpool now need to do whatever it takes to get Salah to sign a new deal or risk losing him to a rival.

‘It may sound crazy but it’s a definite risk for Liverpool,’ he told Football Insider.

‘When you have a player who is doing what Mohamed Salah is doing, normally there are no questions about tying him up.

‘Normally there are no questions about tying him up because that is a priority for the team.

‘I don’t know what‘s going on inside Liverpool, but I know Salah is out-playing his present contract. 100 per cent he is.

‘Whoever is dealing with the negotiations has a problem. Another club like Man City could probably double Mohamed Salah’s money. That is the problem Liverpool have.

‘They work within a structure but that structure is going to get blown up because Salah is playing that well. This is the type of player he is.

‘It would be crazy to lose him over this. They cannot allow it to leave, but we have seen it before. It would not be the first time.

‘The finances are football are so important but with a player like Salah, you have to break the bank.’
