Lorraine Kelly has said she is baffled by the ‘bizarre’ turn of events in the legal proceedings involving Meghan Markle, after the Duchess of Sussex apologised and said she did not intend to deliberately mislead the court after she forgot about asking an aide to brief the author of a biography.

Details about Meghan’s life included in the book play a role in an ongoing legal battle between the Duchess of Sussex and a newspaper.

Associated Newspapers, Metro’s parent company, is appealing against a judge’s decision granting Meghan summary judgment in her copyright and privacy claim against the Mail on Sunday over five articles that reproduced parts of a ‘personal and private’ letter sent to her father Thomas Markle, 77, in August 2018.

Lawyers for ANL have argued the letter was drawn up with ‘public consumption in mind’.

Lorraine spoke to the show’s royal correspondent Russell Myers about the case, which saw Meghan confirm she had misremembered the circumstances around how information was given to the authors of Finding Freedom.

Expressing her opinions about the case, Lorraine said: ‘It’s baffling to me that if you’re going to take a newspaper to court, you need to be absolutely rock solid.’

She added: ‘I wonder why it didn’t come out beforehand? It seems really strange, the timing.’

‘It’s just all seems to be unnecessary. I mean, they didn’t have to take that action… It just seems really unnecessary actually… particularly coming when she was saying that the tabloid press were toxic and needed a warning. All of this just seems such a mess.’

Lorraine went on to say: ‘There’s going to be a lot more to this. It just seems quite bizarre.’

It comes after Meghan said in a witness statement: ‘I apologise to the Court for the fact that I had not remembered these exchanges at the time.

‘I had absolutely no wish or intention to mislead the Defendant or the Court.’

The Duchess added that had she known about the emails she would have been ‘more than happy to refer to them’ as ‘strongly’ supportive of her case and said stress resulting from pregnancy and the aftermath of her miscarriage may have contributed to the error.

Lorraine airs on weekdays at 9am on ITV.
