Liverpool turned down the chance to receive a £20 million fee from Real Madrid for Trent Alexander-Arnold in the January transfer window.

Madrid are now set to finalise an agreement to sign Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer this summer once his contract with Liverpool expires at the end of June.

The Champions League holders have been pursuing the England international for several months and had explored the option of signing him in January due to their own shortage of options on the right side of their defence following Dani Carvajal’s season-ending injury in October.

According to The Times, Madrid were prepared to offer Liverpool a £20m fee for Alexander-Arnold but the Premier League club would not consider selling the right-back while Arne Slot’s side were challenging for four trophies.

Liverpool have since been knocked out of the Champions League and the FA Cup, while they were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final earlier this month.

However, Slot’s side are on course to win their first Premier League title since 2020 as they sit 12 points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table.

Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, is currently sidelined with an ankle injury and the report claims that his decision to leave Liverpool is down to wanting a new challenge at this stage of his career.

Spanish newspaper Marca reported on Tuesday that Madrid have offered Alexander-Arnold a five-year contract.

The defender has been with Liverpool since the age of six and has won six trophies during his time in the first team, including the Premier League and the Champions League.

Elsewhere, it’s understood that Liverpool still remain hopeful over reaching new agreements with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, whose contracts also expire at the end of the season.
