Ian Rush feels that Liverpool must dive into the transfer market in the summer, even if they win the Premier League, saying, ‘they need to keep players on their toes.’

The Reds have made a good start to the season, sitting second in the table and remain the only side unbeaten in the Premier League after seven matches.

Mohamed Salah has been in fine form, currently joint top-scorer in the division with six goals, while Sadio Mane is not too far behind his teammate on four.

With this in mind, Rush does not believe a big splash in the January transfer window is necessary, but even if they achieve great things this season there should be moves next summer.

Liverpool were relatively quiet in the transfer market in the summer after winning the Premier League in 2020 and Rush does not want to see Jurgen Klopp fall into that trap again.

‘If they’re top of the league, why sign somebody?’ Rush told Mail Online. ‘You look at your position in January and see where you are. As long as everyone stays free from injury, I don’t think they need to invest in January.

‘Even if they win the league, I think they should invest because winning the league and keeping the same team, it just doesn’t work like that.

‘Jurgen Klopp knows what he wants, and we trust in him. If he goes to the owners and says “I want this”, I am sure the owners will provide it.

‘Get to January and see where you are but in the summer even if Liverpool do win the league, I am sure they would invest again because they need to keep players on their toes.

‘If they do invest it’ll be in a younger person where the potential is there, not a 28 or 29-year-old.’

Rush is Liverpool’s all-time leading goalscorer with 346 and has been thoroughly impressed with the man who has stormed up to #10 on that list with 134 goals for the club.

In fact, the Welsh legend reckons Salah is not just the best player in the Premier League this season, but on the planet.

‘Mo Salah at the moment is the best player in the world,’ Rush said. ‘He has taken it to a different level.

‘He has been absolutely fantastic this season. ‘Not just with his goalscoring but also with his assists as well.’
