Liverpool are hopeful of completing a move for RB Leipzig’s Dominik Szoboszlai, with a deal looking much likelier than in recent days.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has attracted plenty of interest thanks to his performances for Leipzig and Hungary, notably from Newcastle United as they look to continue the significant investment in their squad.

However, The Athletic report that the Magpies have now withdrawn from the race for the Hungarian, leaving Liverpool to lead the race for his signature.

Even as frontrunners, the move had looked unlikely earlier this week but the report states that things have changed and Liverpool now fancy their chances of making another big signing.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that the deal is at a ‘very advanced’ stage and there are no issues on personal terms with the player, it is just final haggling over price between the clubs.

Szoboszlai has a release clause worth €70million (£60.1m) which Liverpool would rather not pay, but Leipzig may demand on that fee being met.

Szoboszlai scored 10 goals last season in all competitions, matching his tally from the previous campaign as he turned out for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga and Champions League.

Speaking earlier this month, the Hungarian admitted that he would be keen on move to a big club if it came around.

‘There are always rumours about players and clubs in football,’ he told Sport1. ‘I think every kid dreams of a big club, whether it’s in Spain, England or Germany. These are all big clubs in the top five leagues.

‘I’m now in Germany with a top three club, but you know that football is fast-paced, so a lot can happen at any time.’
