The 22-year-old has started his career with the French club very impressively, scoring five times in his first three games since a summer move from Manchester United.
The £26.6m deal looks likely to be a very good one for Marseille, but Greenwood’s international future remains in question.
The forward has one cap for England, coming four years ago against Iceland, but much has happened since then to see him moving to Marseille.
Greenwood only left Manchester United in July, but he had not played for the Red Devils since January 2022 when he was arrested for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.
In February 2023 all charges were dropped and he continued his club career on loan at Getafe and now at Marseille, but there is no sign that he is about to return to the international fold.
Asked about his availability, Carsley said of Greenwood at a press conference on Friday: ‘Mason wasn’t a player that we can consider, to be honest, no. I’m aware of how he’s doing, but he wasn’t under consideration.’
Another man who has played for England and Marseille, Chris Waddle, feels that Carsley will be taking note of Greenwood’s performances even if he is not currently able to pick him.
‘He’s a very good player,’ Waddle told FlashScore. ‘He’s got the number 10 shirt and England seem to be producing a lot of good number 10s these days. He’s come out of the blocks very quick, started scoring goals from the off. The new England manager will be taking notice of this.
‘We all know the French league is quite strong, but it’s not as strong as three or four other leagues in Europe now, you’ve got to take that into account. It is not as strong as the Premier League, La Liga or the Bundesliga. But all he can do is do what he’s doing in Marseille. Score goals and play well.’
The Sun reported in August that Jamaica had approached Greenwood over the possibility of switching international allegiance away from England as he is also eligible for the Caribbean nation.
