The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its night surveillance operations to combat the rising cases of illegal waste disposal across the metropolis. The agency’s recent crackdown has resulted in multiple arrests of environmental law violators who attempt to dispose of waste under the cover of darkness.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, revealed that the agency’s enforcement teams are now maintaining 24-hour surveillance to apprehend individuals violating waste management regulations. In a recent operation on February 7, 2025, the team arrested Engr Akinsola at 9:20 p.m. for illegal dumping along Egbeda-Akowonjo Road. The suspect, who falsely claimed to be a police officer, was found to be operating without proper waste management facilities.
In another significant operation, over 25 individuals were apprehended at Abati Primary School, Shasha Road, including six vehicle owners who were caught transporting and disposing of large quantities of waste illegally. The agency also reported the arrest of one Fatima on February 5, 2025, for similar offenses along Akowonjo Road.
LAWMA has announced a dual approach to addressing the waste management crisis, combining strict enforcement with public education. The agency’s advocacy team is currently conducting door-to-door awareness campaigns to educate residents about proper waste disposal methods.
Dr. Gbadegesin emphasized the importance of proper waste management practices, urging residents to report any challenges with waste collection services directly to LAWMA rather than resorting to illegal dumping. He highlighted the agency’s commitment to maintaining a zero-tolerance policy toward environmental violations.
“Our goal is to transform Lagos into a cleaner, more sustainable city,” stated Dr. Gbadegesin. “We encourage all residents to utilize our customer service channels for reporting waste collection issues and to actively participate in maintaining a cleaner environment.”
