The Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) has urged residents to exercise caution and avoid boarding unfit and dilapidated vehicles operating within the state.

The Director of VIS, Akin-George Fashola, issued this advisory in a statement released on Sunday, which was signed by the Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Bolanle Ogunlola.

Fashola expressed concern over the increasing presence of rickety vehicles on Lagos roads, describing them as a significant threat to the safety of commuters and other road users.

The warning follows the recent clampdown by VIS operatives, who impounded several visibly unsafe vehicles across various parts of the city.

According to Fashola, the seized vehicles including one he personally intercepted were in deplorable condition, featuring worn-out components, outdated systems, and a complete lack of essential safety mechanisms.

He described such vehicles as ‘ticking time bombs,’ highlighting the urgent need for stricter adherence to roadworthiness regulations in the state.

He stated, “The rickety vehicles have been linked to numerous accidents in the state, often resulting in loss of lives, injuries, and property damage. Several critical issues common among the seized vehicles are unstable tires due to expiration, potential brake failure caused by makeshift repairs, and disjointed body compartments weakened by rust, all of which render them unfit for commercial use.”

He observed that a significant number of these vehicles primarily operate at night, heightening the danger posed to unsuspecting passengers.

As a precaution, the VIS Director urged members of the public to prioritise their safety by refraining from boarding any vehicle that appears visibly dilapidated or poorly maintained.

He gave assurances that all impounded vehicles would be permanently taken off the roads and not returned to circulation.

He further stated that the VIS is actively collaborating with relevant stakeholders, including road transport unions, to ensure Lagos roads remain safe and secure for all commuters.

Additionally, he encouraged residents to report any encounters or sightings of unfit vehicles through the VIS complaint channels at [email protected] or by calling the Ministry of Transportation hotlines: 09020004000 and 09020009000.The Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) has urged residents to exercise caution and avoid boarding unfit and dilapidated vehicles operating within the state.
