The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, has seized 25 commercial and 15 private vehicles running illegal garages and causing road obstructions in Oyingbo, Ijora and Idumota areas.
This was disclosed in a post on LASTMA’s, X handle on Friday, June 21.
According to LASTMA, the operation targeted illegal garages, causing traffic issues in Oyingbo, Ijora, and Idumota areas.
The team was led by Kayode Odunuga, with guidance from the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa.
The post reads in part, “In a decisive move to restore order and ensure the free flow of traffic, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, specifically targeted illegal garages that have been a persistent source of congestion and inconvenience for residents and commuters.”
He confirmed that this effort is part of the government’s broader plan to improve transportation efficiency and maintain order on the roads.
Giwa highlighted the importance of enforcing traffic regulations to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.
“Illegal garages have been a significant challenge in our quest to maintain a seamless traffic flow in Lagos. These impoundments send a strong message to all offenders that the state will not tolerate activities that disrupt public order and endanger the lives of our citizens,” he said.
According to Giwa, the move is part of a broader initiative to enhance the city’s transportation network and maintain law and order on the roads.
“Our goal is to create a safe and orderly environment for all road users and this action is a crucial step in that direction.”
The areas targeted, Oyingbo, Ijora, and Idumota, are traffic congestion hotspots due to unauthorized parking and makeshift garages.
LASTMA’s intervention concentrated on removing these obstacles and improving traffic conditions in these crucial zones.
Residents and business owners have shown backing for the government’s actions, recognizing the positive impact on their daily activities.
LASTMA has assured the public that the operation will be sustained and extended to other parts of the city where illegal garages and related activities are prevalent.
Giwa emphasized the importance of all vehicle owners and operators following the state’s traffic rules and working with authorities to prevent penalties.
He restated the government’s main goal of establishing a more pleasant and livable Lagos for all.
Giwa encouraged drivers to consider the roads as their own and to promptly report any broken down or abandoned trailers to LASTMA.
