Lagos govt seeks voluntary blood donors

Blood donation

The Lagos State Government has stressed the need for citizens to undergo compulsory blood donation regularly.

The state Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, at the commemoration of World Blood Donor Day, on Tuesday, said the state would need 100,000 units of blood annually.

Abayomi said, “So, where do we get blood from? We get blood from those kind citizens of Lagos State that decide that they are going to donate voluntarily to give to people who need blood or blood components.

“Our minimum target is 200,000 units of blood a year for Lagos State. And we’ve only managed to hit 50 per cent. We are short of 100,000 units of blood. We have a population of at least 20 million people and the blood donation age is between 18 and 65. That means that there are at least 15 million eligible people in the state to become voluntary blood donors.”

The Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service, Dr Bodunrin, said the theme for the 2022 World Blood Donor Day, ‘Donating blood is an act of solidarity, join effort and save lives,’ was chosen to draw attention to the roles voluntary blood donations play in saving lives.
