The Lagos State Government has swiftly mobilized its Emergency Response Committee to address a concerning outbreak of diphtheria at King’s College, Victoria Island Annex. The outbreak was confirmed following reports of a 12-year-old student who displayed symptoms and subsequently succumbed to complications related to the infection.
Health Commissioner Prof. Akin Abayomi reassured the public that the situation is under control and urged residents to remain calm. The index case was reported on February 22, when the student exhibited a sore throat and fever, leading to his admission at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). Despite prompt medical intervention, the student tragically passed away on March 6 due to myocarditis, a severe complication of diphtheria.
Following this incident, 34 close contacts of the deceased were monitored, with 14 developing symptoms consistent with the disease. Those affected were transferred to LUTH for further evaluation, where 12 were diagnosed with early signs of diphtheria and are now receiving appropriate treatment.
In response to the outbreak, the government has initiated an Emergency Operations Committee (EOC) to facilitate containment measures and prevent further fatalities. A preliminary inspection at King’s College revealed areas needing improved infection prevention and control (IPC) measures, which will be addressed promptly.
To fortify defenses against the outbreak, a targeted vaccination campaign will be launched for all students and healthcare providers associated with the school. This initiative may expand statewide to enhance community immunity against diphtheria.
Abayomi emphasized the importance of public awareness, stating that information leaflets detailing the signs and symptoms of diphtheria will be distributed across healthcare facilities. The Commissioner also advised residents to prioritize good hygiene, avoid crowded areas, and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms.
The Lagos State Government has assured that it is collaborating with federal health agencies, including the WHO and Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), to coordinate a comprehensive response. With nearly 500,000 doses of diphtheria vaccines available, officials are prepared to strategically deploy them in high-risk locations.
Lagos State remains committed to safeguarding public health and ensuring that such outbreaks are effectively managed. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperate with health authorities to mitigate the impact of this outbreak.
