Lack of clarity over Anthony Joshua vs Dillian Whyte is frustrating, we need answers soon

In his latest column, former Olympian and heavyweight contender Frazer Clarke assesses what’s going wrong in the heavyweight division and picks over his own victory over Mariusz Wach this month.

All quiet across heavyweight boxing

It’s a bit of a strange time for heavyweight boxing. We have had two fights of real significance at the top of the division this year, Anthony Joshua vs Jermaine Franklin and Joe Joyce vs Zhang Zhilei.

There has been so much confusion and not enough direction and that relates to almost every top 10 fighter, including the man who holds the WBC title in Tyson Fury.

Even Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois has not been officially confirmed yet, it is meant to be soon and I am not hearing too much about it. We don’t know when we are going to get these fights we truly want to see. We keep waiting.

It did look like we would be getting the Anthony Joshua vs Dillian Whyte rematch this summer and I still hope that happens.

But that is yet another one that is up in the air at the moment and the lack of clarity has been frustrating.

Talk of an issue with a rematch clause has been suggested and personally, I am not sure where that one is at. We are being teased again, still waiting for a breakthrough.

Hopefully there is a domino effect at play here. Once one or two of them are confirmed, more follow. But I’m not full of hope.

My next steps after Wach win

Getting the win over Mariusz Wach at York Hall a few weeks ago was a big step for me and my career. There were still a few things I would have liked to tick off the list in there against a very experienced campaigner but of course, main objective was to get the rounds in.

Going the distance with a former world title challenger was a huge thing for my development and I didn’t lose a round.

There is of course still room for improvement, I am looking to do that every time I step in the ring. But it was a step in the right direction and a really important win after a difficult few months.

Going forward, I would like to fight again in September. Against who, I am not sure yet. There are plenty of conversations to be had in the next few weeks about what is next for me.

But another learning fight, another one where I am learning a bit more on the job would be ideal. But then again, if the opportunity to fight for a title comes up I will be taking that in a heartbeat. You never know what is going to develop in boxing.

Wach was a very durable opponent, someone who had gone the distance with people like Wladimir Klitschko and Dillan Whyte. I need people like that, people who make you think in there, opponents you get something from.

After Wach, it only makes sense to keep fighting people like that, guys who have been at a high level.

In recent months, I have learned my lesson to just let my boxing do the talking, everything else in the background can take care of itself.
