Justice Merchand has done the right thing by what I suggested more than one year ago in one of my articles widely publicized on the Facebook that Donald Trump, regardless of his victory in the last election, should still be convicted and sentenced for a crime that has nothing to do with his official duties and privileges and immunities as a former President but that the sentence can be contemporaneously suspended by the Judge, but that the sentence would remain on his record and resume forever and that would provide a useful lesson to other outlaws like him who could be elected President in the foreseeable future following his lackluster profile as arguably the most criminally- minded President in all of American History.
While I was a student at the Royal Institute of Public Administration in London years ago, I have seen a British Judge give the same kind of ruling in a criminal case involving one of my Uncles who told the Judge he could not afford a lawyer but craved the indulgence of the Judge to let him defend himself and the Judge had granted his request.
After my Uncle had finished his defense, you could hear a pin drop as the Judge and the whole Court were spellbound as my Uncle whose name I would keep to my chest, had given an iron clad defense in flawless English as to why he had used some false information to obtain a Government grant or scholarship to complete his education and to obtain his Bachelor’s degree from the University of London where he was top of his class with a first class degree in English Literature.
My Uncle had returned to Nigeria years later to become a leading politician in the Ruling NPN led by President Shehu Shagari who appointed him the Chairman of NTA and Radio Nigeria as I recall.
My Uncle was an orator who spoke English with the eloquence of a Winston Churchill and Hausa language with the dexterity and eloquence of a Tafawa Balewa and a Dan Maraya Jos.
The British Judge had seen in my Uncle the great talent that he did not want to destroy or disrupt by putting him in jail.
He convicted him but simultaneously suspended the sentence to let him return to Nigeria on his own volition and without that sentence hanging on his record like a sword of Damocles for the rest of his life.
The sentence of DonaldTrump by Judge Marchand has nevertheless helped to preserve the sanctity of the Rule of Law in America and has proved to all and sundry that nobody including the President of the United States is above the Law.
Kudos to Judge Merchand for a job well done.
I rest my case.
